There is a million-dollar question that how much water one should drink every day. The answer to this question is often not easy and is controversial sometimes. There are varying points of view and recommendations by the experts. A person’s individual water need depends on so many factors. It depends on how active you are and where your residence is. There is no single formula that can fit all.
Water is our body’s primary and chief chemical component that comprises about 50 to 60 per cent of our body weight. Our body depends a lot on drinking water to survive. Every single cell in an animal body needs water all the time. Every time there is a loss of water, there is a need to replenish it with a fresh supply. If the source of supply is bunged up, the very life will be choked to death. Our body loses water through urination, excreta, perspiration and bowel movement. Water keeps the body temperature normal and also lubricates various joints. It gives the joints the cushioning they need to avoid frictions. Lack of water may lead to dehydration. This condition is fatal because the absence of or dearth of water in our body clogs the free flow of all the goodness across our system. Water is the lifeline for carrying essential ingredients across the human body and its organs. We should try to know how much fluid our body needs on average daily. Generally, we need about 15 cups or 3.5 litres of fluid a day. The 20 per cent of fluid comes from the food that we take. Some people advise that we should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. It is the minimum one can drink. If one does more physical work and sweats out, the consumption should be more because most of the water is lost through perspiration. The drinking water must be clean and healthy. Otherwise, health issues will crop up as additional issues. Any person can remain healthy if they consume drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel dehydrated or thirsty. For some people, fewer than the estimated number of glasses suffices. For others, it is much higher in terms of quantity and quality. Only water is no enough. It should be free from bacteria and microbes, full of salts and minerals, and should be without any odour. If you do exercise, you need more water. If you live in moist, sultry, warm climates, your body requires more water than those who live in the much cooler climes. Your total health also will determine the quantity of water you need. During fever, vomiting or stomach disorder, you lose plenty of fluid and you get dehydrated. If there are bladder infections or some infections in the urinary tract, your body will need much more than normal. Water is not the only option to remain hydrated. You can consume fruits, juices and other many kinds of drinks whenever or wherever available. It will take care of the fact that you have not drunk much water lately. Beverages like milk and tea are composed of water mostly. Soda water, energy drinks, sweetened drinks also provide fluid to you, but they are sweetened and they contain more calories than plain water.
